Knockout matches revealed

It was a good day for the mobile phone operators. The key question on every team's lips was - what was the score in the other matches? Once their own match was over, it was time to find out the result of other games.

At one stage during the day, Argentina were in one of the top four places that would see them get a shot at winning the trophy. A gutsy 13-10 victory over Wales meant that the Pumitas were more interested than ever in proceedings at Issoire and Vichy, where France were playing South Africa and Australia were taking on New Zealand respectively.

Argentina needed one or more of those teams to lose and not pick up a bonus point. The half time scores were not encouraging - 11-10 to South Africa in Issoire and 13-11 to Australia in Vichy.

Back to Riom

Meanwhile, back in Riom, England were hoping for a similar slip up by one of the top four teams, and needed to secure a bonus point against Scotland themselves. News from elsewhere must only have deepened the gloom in the England dressing room at half time, as they trailed the Scots 9-0.

An impressive second half rally from Jim Mallinder's youngsters, however, saw them score the four tries they needed to beat Scotland 31-12 and gain a bonus point in the process.

A full-blooded second half in Issoire saw only three points added, from the boot of South Africa's Isma-eel Dollie, to secure South Africa top spot, but also a losing bonus point for France.

Brett calms nerves

Josh Holmes' try for Australia after 70 minutes against New Zealand meant that the young All Blacks were only one point away from a losing bonus and a place in the last four. But Stephen Brett's 75th minute penalty brought the score back to 21-17 and ensured that New Zealand rather than England or Argentina claimed the crucial fourth place.
