Following the results of the first two match days of the IRB Under 21 World Championship in Auvergne, France, eight of the 12 teams still harbour hopes of making the top four, and with it a shot at the World Championship crown.
The crucial third and final pool matches take place on Saturday 13 June, and predicting all the possible outcomes would tax even the most astute mathematical minds. Unfortunately, no such skills exist on the irbu21.com team, but instead we give you a flavour of the possibilities.
The top four in the standings going into the matches are France, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. France play South Africa in Issoire and Australia face New Zealand in Vichy with both games kicking off at 1800 local time. The winner of both games is guaranteed a place in the last four. The losers will have to rely on favourable results elsewhere.
The teams currently lying in fifth to eighth - Scotland, Argentina, Wales and England - are involved in two intriguing matches in Riom - which could see one or more of them make it into the top four. Scotland face England and Argentina play Wales.
Scotland and Argentina currently have a one point advantage, thanks to bonus points picked up in the opening two match days. If either win they will be assured a place in the top four if either Australia or New Zealand lose and fail to pick up a bonus point.
Bonus points required
For England and Wales to qualify for the top four, they really need to pick up a win and a bonus point.
If both matches involving the top four end in draws, it is almost certain that they will retain their positions in the semi finals. If New Zealand beat Australia and France draw with South Africa, well now we are getting into the realms of the mathematical whizz kids, and well outside the capabilities of the irbu21.com website team...
One thing is for sure - for the teams involved, it will be a case of doing their best on the field and then desperately trying to find out what the scores are in the other matches.
Stay with irbu21.com to find out the latest on Saturday evening.
